Filmgear Canada is a Vancouver-based authorized Canadian dealer for amaran, Aputure, DJI, Nanlite, Tilta, and other professional cinema lighting, camera, and rigging brands. Since 2015, we have supplied filmmakers, production houses, broadcasters, studios, and rental companies across Canada with manufacturer-warranted equipment and dedicated production-account support.

Origins and trajectory (2015 → today)

Filmgear Canada was established in 2015 by Eric and co-founder Richard Macdonald — Eric a working filmmaker with prior international experience in film equipment manufacturing, sales, and rental operations; Richard a Vancouver-based local gaffer with production credits across the BC film market.

At the time of founding, the Vancouver-area rental landscape was well-served by long-established suppliers, but the regional inventory base leaned heavily on legacy HMI and tungsten fixtures. Filmgear Canada was the first rental house in the region to commit fully to LED lighting, building one of British Columbia's most comprehensive LED rental inventories around the then-emerging Aputure and amaran point-source lines, and actively championing LED adoption in mainstream Canadian production workflows during a period when LED was still considered supplementary rather than primary.

That LED-first positioning, combined with deep relationships with our manufacturer partners, proved decisive: when the 2020 pandemic compressed rental demand industry-wide, we leveraged our established standing in Canadian authorized retail to transition into a full-line dealer role. Eleven years on, Filmgear Canada operates as one of British Columbia's major authorized dealers across our brand portfolio, supplying the crews and production houses we built trust with through the rental years, plus a national customer base served by direct shipping from our Vancouver warehouse.

The team

Eric — Founder & Managing Director

Eric's background spans the full lighting equipment value chain. He owns and operates manufacturing facilities, and previously held sales and rental management roles at a film equipment company in China before establishing Filmgear Canada in 2015. He is also a working filmmaker with on-set production experience. This combination of manufacturer-side, retail/rental operations, and production-floor perspective informs Filmgear's product selection, inventory commitment, and technical consultation standards.

Richard Macdonald — Co-founder, Local Gaffer

Richard is a Vancouver-based gaffer with extensive on-set credits across the BC production market. As Filmgear's co-founder, his working-set perspective shaped the company's original LED-first inventory strategy and continues to inform our technical positioning. Richard remains active in BC production crewing alongside his Filmgear involvement.

Roger Yue — Sales Manager, B2B & Production Accounts

Roger is a Vancouver-based freelance cinematographer with 10 years of professional shooting experience across real estate, commercial / advertising, music video, and documentary production. He uses the equipment Filmgear sells on paid jobs, which positions him exceptionally well to advise on specification trade-offs and production-ready configuration. Roger leads Filmgear Canada's B2B sales and production-account management.
