The Aputure STORM 400x is a compact 400W tunable-white point-source light for interview, commercial and location crews, and it runs on AC or two V-mount batteries.

Quick Answer

The Aputure STORM 400x is a high-output cinema LED monolight in Aputure's STORM line, sold here in the V-Mount configuration for off-grid battery power. It targets productions that want one powerful fixture with modern controls to serve as the key light. In a kit, it's designed as the primary key light for narrative, commercial, and event coverage, and it takes Aputure's Bowens-mount modifiers, such as fresnels, softboxes, and snoots, to shape that key.

Not Recommended For

  • It is not designed as a secondary accent light: it is built as a powerful, primary single-fixture key for narrative, commercial, and event coverage.

FAQ

Can the STORM 400x run on one V-mount battery?

No. Aputure's manual requires two V-mount or Gold Mount batteries at the same time, rated 14.4V or 14.8V. Each battery must deliver at least 10A continuous for 50% output, 12A for 60%, 15A for 75% and 20A for full output.

Is the STORM 400x as bright as an LS 600d?

Not with reflectors fitted. At 3m and 5600K, Aputure rates the 400x at 5,090 lux with its included 35° reflector and the LS 600d Pro at 8,500 lux with its Hyper Reflector. The 400x is smaller, IP65 sealed and tunes from 2,500K to 10,000K instead of being daylight only.

Should I buy the STORM 400x or the STORM 700x?

Choose the 400x if you carry your own kit or need battery power. Its lamp head weighs 3.95 kg and it runs on AC or two batteries. The 700x lamp head weighs 5.15 kg, runs on AC only and reaches 18,670 lux at 3m with its included reflector, against 5,090 lux for the 400x.

Will my Bowens softboxes fit the STORM 400x?

Yes. ProLock is a locking Bowens mount, so Bowens modifiers fit and the collar clamps them in place. Check that the modifier is rated for a 400W light.

How loud is the STORM 400x fan?

Aputure rates the lamp head at 29 dBA in Medium, 33 dBA in High and 36 dBA in Smart mode at 1m. Silent mode turns the fan off but limits output to 45W, according to Aputure's manual.
