FAQ

Is the autofocus fast and accurate enough for portraits and events?

Accurate, yes; fast, not the fastest. It uses a quiet STM motor with Sony eye AF and subject tracking. Dustin Abbott found focus very accurate on the eye and judged it only a hair slower than the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DN, though nowhere near as fast as Sony's 85mm F1.4 GM II. PetaPixel also found it noticeably slower than the Sony and Viltrox alternatives. For most portrait and event work the speed is enough; for fast sports, a first-party lens is the safer choice.

How sharp is it wide open at f/1.4?

Sharp enough for portraits wide open. OpticalLimits rated the centre very good to excellent at f/1.4 in its 42MP tests and recommends f/2 for a tack-sharp centre, with peak results between f/4 and f/5.6. It gets noticeably softer at very close focus distances, so stop down for close-up detail. OpticalLimits also notes visible axial colour fringing wide open.

Sirui Aurora 85mm or Viltrox 85mm f/1.4 Pro?

Choose the Viltrox if autofocus speed comes first; choose the Sirui for a smaller, lighter lens. SIRUI lists the Sony E version at 540 g with a 67mm filter thread, and owners comparing the two keep pointing to the weight difference. PetaPixel found the Sirui's autofocus noticeably slower than the Viltrox. For travel, street and long handheld days, many owners prefer the Sirui.

Do I need to update the firmware, and how?

Yes, update before your first shoot. The lens has a USB-C port for firmware updates, and SIRUI posts the Sony E firmware on its website. The current Sony E version for this lens is V1.1.0, dated September 16, 2026. SIRUI has kept releasing updates since launch, and several owners report better autofocus after updating.

What if my copy is soft or slow to focus?

Test it as soon as it arrives. Most full reviews found no problems, but some owners report soft edges or slow focusing copies, and Fstoppers' review unit focused much better after SIRUI's free calibration. Update the firmware first, then check focus and edge sharpness at f/1.4. If it fails within 14 days of delivery, send us a short video and the serial number or bring it to our store; if we confirm a quality problem, we replace it, or refund you if no replacement is available.
