The Tilta Hydra x Dan Ming Speed Pan System turns a 15mm rod-based wireless follow focus motor into a speed pan head: the motor drives a geared, rotatable base so an action camera or small mirrorless camera can whip through pans of more than 360 degrees for car-to-car work. The Base Kit is the head and its mounting parts, the Pro Kit adds three Hydra 4.5 inch electronic suction cups and three heavy-duty articulating arms, and the follow focus motor is sold separately.

Key Features

  • A rotatable mounting plate with geared teeth is driven by a 15mm rod-based wireless follow focus motor for near-instant pans of more than 360 degrees.
  • The mini tilt head adds ±15 degrees of tilt for framing and unusual angles.
  • Mount action cameras on the included baseplate, or DSLR and mirrorless cameras through the Manfrotto receiver and Manfrotto/Arca quick release plate.
  • Three NATO rails under the base take articulating arms, suction cups or custom supports, and the unit also has NATO and 1/4"-20 points.
  • A hole through the centre of the pan axis lets you route motor cables and tethers so they do not twist while the head spins.
  • The cheese plate adapter supports 2-inch spacing for US cheese plates and 50 mm for EU plates; rotate the base to switch.
  • Pro Kit: three Hydra 4.5 inch electronic suction cups with NATO brackets and three Tilta Pro Articulating Arms with dual NATO attachments.
  • Developed with Dan Ming, 1st AC and systems engineer on F1: The Movie.

FAQ

Which motor should I use with the Speed Pan System?

Tilta says any Nucleus-series motor works, depending on the weight of your rig, and recommends the Nucleus-M II for the best overall performance. Set the Nucleus-M II to Heavy Load mode in its menu.

Why is the camera wobbling during high-speed pans?

The camera's centre of gravity is probably not lined up with the centre of the pan axis. Offset weight acts like an unbalanced washing machine, so re-centre the camera on the plate before you spin it fast.

Can I use a matte box with the Speed Pan System?

Tilta recommends removing clamp-on matte boxes unless you really need them, because centrifugal force grows the farther an accessory sits from the centre. If a matte box is required, secure it with zip ties.

How should I attach the camera plate to the head?

Always use two screws. One screw can loosen under fast acceleration and braking. A camera cage adds stability and more mounting threads.

How do I keep cables from twisting?

Run the motor cable and any tethers through the hole in the centre of the pan axis, which Tilta built in for cable management.
