The Tilta Illusion Magnetic VND Adapter snaps onto an Illusion Magnetic Circular Polarizer and turns it into a variable ND filter: 1 to 5 stops on the standard polarizer, or 6 to 10 stops on the polarizer with 5 stops of ND. It needs an Illusion Magnetic Circular Polarizer underneath to work, which is sold separately.

Key Features

  • Stacks magnetically on an Illusion Magnetic Circular Polarizer and turns it into a variable ND filter.
  • On the Polarizer Only it adjusts between 1 and 5 stops, so you can hold exposure when the light changes mid-shoot.
  • On the Polarizer with 5-Stop ND it covers 6 to 10 stops, so you can keep a wide aperture in harsh outdoor sunlight.
  • On the Polarizer with 1/4 Black Mist it adds 1 to 5 stops of variable ND on top of the Black Mist diffusion.
  • Cinema-grade Full Spectrum (FS) coating gives low reflectivity and even light transmission to keep colours true.
  • Works only on an Illusion Magnetic Circular Polarizer, which mounts on an Illusion Magnetic Filter Adapter Ring.

FAQ

Can I use the VND Adapter on its own?

No. Tilta designed it to stack on an Illusion Magnetic Circular Polarizer, which is sold separately. The polarizer is what makes the variable ND work, so you need one of the three Illusion polarizers underneath.

I want hard stops instead of a variable ND. What should I use?

For a fixed reduction, use the Illusion Polarizer with 5-Stop ND on its own, which gives 5 stops (ND32). Keep the VND Adapter for shoots where the light keeps changing and you want to dial between 6 and 10 stops.

How do I adjust the ND without the polarizer moving?

Lock the polarizer on the adapter ring first. Tilta designed the base polarizer to stay in a fixed position when filters are added on top, so you set reflections once and then adjust the exposure with the VND Adapter.

Will it shift my colours?

Tilta uses a cinema-grade Full Spectrum (FS) coating on the VND Adapter for low reflectivity and even light transmission, with the aim of keeping the true colour of the scene. As with any variable ND, check white balance after a large ND change.

Is the VND Adapter included in the Illusion kits?

Yes. Both the Creator Kit and the Ultimate Kit include one VND Adapter. Buy it separately if you started with a single polarizer.
