Why 300x to 600x is a jump, not a step

Inside the Halo family, most upgrades are increments. The step from the Halo 200x ($358.99 CAD) to the 300x is $60, and our 200x vs 300x guide talks people out of that one as often as into it. The 300x to 600x step is different. For $240 you move up a full output tier: amaran's published figures put the 300x at about 16,200 lux bare at 1 m and the 600x at about 32,500 lux, almost exactly double. One owner on r/cinematography called the 600x "very small for how much output it has."

Double matters because the jobs that defeat a 300x all eat light. A big softbox with both diffusion layers in costs stops before any light reaches your subject. A lantern spends output in every direction. A bounced ceiling is the softest source in the room and the hungriest. And light falls off with the square of distance, so a subject at 4 m gets a quarter of what one at 2 m gets. Push these with a 300x and you are at 100% output, hoping.

The 600x buys headroom. The exposure that forces a 300x to run flat out sits near half power on a 600x, which means less heat, less fan, and a spare stop when a client asks for one more. For sustained running, ePHOTOzine ran a 600x for hours with the fan set to High and reported it simply kept working.

What stays the same

Everything except output, size, and weight. Both use the same bi-color engine over the same 2700K to 6500K range, with identical measured color: Curtis Judd's Sekonic C-800 put the Halo 300x at SSI 74 in daylight and 84 in tungsten (SSI is a 0 to 100 match-to-reference score, higher is better), and Gerald Undone's series measurements agree. Both have the same wide 85° bare beam, which fills a softbox evenly. Both share the Bowens mount, the two-dial control layout, the Sidus Link app with NFC tap-to-pair, and quiet fans. Both are AC wall power only with no battery route, and neither carries a weather rating. Where the 300x wins

The 300x is $240 cheaper, noticeably lighter, and happy on any standard stand. At 1 to 2 m through a mid-size softbox, which describes almost every podcast, interview, and desk setup, it already has output to spare. Curtis Judd rated the 300x the best budget light he had tested to date, and working gaffers in the amaran creators community have been buying 300x units to replace old tungsten heads on their grip trucks. If your room is controlled and your subject sits still, the extra output of a 600x is money parked on a stand.

Owner reports worth hearing first. One owner on r/Aputure reports the 300x does not restore its last settings when power is reconnected and needs a manual switch-on, unlike other amaran fixtures. Owners in the amaran creators Facebook group report that some softboxes fit fussily and that the power cord runs short. None of these are dealbreakers, but you should hear them from us before you buy rather than from a forum after.

Stands, outlets, and fan noise

The 600x is the heavier light, so give it a stand you trust. Any solid stand rated for 10 lb or more will carry it, and a sandbag on the legs is cheap insurance for either light. Power is simple: the 600x draws more than the 300x, but both run from an ordinary wall outlet, no special circuit needed. On noise, Gerald Undone measured the Halo series under 28 dBA, quiet enough to work near a live mic, and reviewers note the fans mostly stay idle until you drive the light hard.

The $330 question: Halo 600x or Amaran Ray 660c?

At $658.99, the 600x sits one shelf below the Amaran Ray 660c ($988.99 CAD), and plenty of buyers stand at our counter doing that math. The $330 buys three concrete things. First, the Ray's full-color OmniColor engine measures better even as white light: Curtis Judd's C-800 read the Ray 660c at SSI 82 in daylight and 86 in tungsten against the Halo's 74 and 84. Second, the Ray is IP54 splash resistant; the Halo has no weather rating. Third, Curtis Judd rates the 660c's yoke as the same grade of metal as the Aputure STORM 400X. Can the 600x light a church?

Honestly: it is the entry point, not the destination. In a modest room, one 600x will key a lectern, a podcast corner, or a single zone of a small platform. The job most churches actually describe, throwing clean light 30 to 40 ft onto a stage from the back of a sanctuary, calls for a purpose-built fixture in the Nanlite FC-500C ($788.29 CAD) or Aputure STORM class.
