Buy an Amaran Halo if your light lives indoors on wall power and you want the most clean white light per dollar for interviews, podcasts, and YouTube studios. Buy an Amaran Ray if you shoot weddings, events, documentary, or anything on location, if you ever need color, or if you simply want better skin tones. Ray's white light is not the same white light. It measures a full tier better in daylight mode. Halo runs $168.99 to $658.99 CAD across five sizes. Ray runs $269.00 to $988.99 CAD across four. Both families are Bowens-mount COB monolights from amaran, and both run on the same Sidus Link app as Aputure's cinema fixtures. The naming is the decoder: x means bi-color white light, c means full color. Halo is the bi-color line, five lights from the 60x to the 600x, tunable from 2700K to 6500K, introduced in March 2026. Ray is the full-color line, four lights from the 60c to the 660c, with a 2300K to 10000K range plus full HSI color, introduced in 2025. If you arrived believing Ray is just a Halo with RGB bolted on, that is the first thing to unlearn, and it changes who should buy which.

The color premium is roughly $100 at the bottom of the ladder and $330 at the top. Every model above is in stock at our Vancouver shop as of this update except the Ray 120c. That one is our best seller of the year and is often available to order rather than sitting on a shelf.

Ray is not Halo plus color. The white light itself is different.

This is the part most buyers miss, and it is the real reason the two lines are priced apart. Halo uses a bi-color emitter set: warm white and cool white, mixed. Ray uses amaran's OmniColor engine, which adds an indigo emitter to the usual red, green, blue, and white set. That indigo fills in parts of the spectrum a bi-color chip leaves empty, so Ray's plain white output renders color more faithfully before you touch a single color feature.

You can put a number on it. SSI, the Spectral Similarity Index, scores how closely a light's spectrum matches a reference source on a 0 to 100 scale, and higher means truer color, especially on skin. Gerald Undone and Curtis Judd each metered the Halo line with a Sekonic C-800 spectrometer and landed on the same results: about 74 in daylight mode and 84 in tungsten. Curtis Judd metered Ray fixtures at 82 in daylight mode, and between 84 and 86 in tungsten depending on the model.

Read the ladder as three tiers: Halo at 74, Ray at 82, Aputure STORM at about 85. Curtis Judd's take on the middle step was that OmniColor comes very close to the BLAIR engine in Aputure's STORM line, at a fraction of the price. He also metered a Ray dimmed to 1 percent output still holding an SSI of 82, so the color does not fall apart at low levels.

Two honesty notes. First, both reviewers disclosed a relationship with amaran: Gerald Undone is a disclosed amaran ambassador, and Curtis Judd's units were supplied by the brand. That is exactly why we cite their spectrometer readings rather than their verdicts. A calibrated meter survives a conflict of interest better than an adjective does. Second, none of this makes the Halo a bad light. amaran rates it at CRI 96 and TLCI 97 on the friendlier scales, it white-balances cleanly on its own, and at tungsten the two lines nearly meet. The gap lives in daylight mode, which is where most video work lives too.

Five decision axes beyond color

Once you know about the color engine, these are the differences that actually decide the purchase.

The shared features are just as useful to know. Both series pair with a phone by NFC tap, even while the light is powered off. Both run quiet: Gerald Undone measured Halo fans under 28 dBA, and Curtis Judd found Ray's fans rarely spin below 60 percent output. Curtis Judd also verified both series stay flicker-free at 10 percent dim under high shutter angles, which matters for interviews and slow motion. Neither has DMX built in. Both take an optional USB-C DMX adapter, so you only pay for that if your rig needs it.

One battery number is worth memorizing. Caleb Pike ran a Ray 120c at full daylight output for about an hour and a half on a high-output USB-C PD battery, but only about 27 minutes on amaran's own magnetic Peak battery. The Peak is a top-up, not a shift plan, and that is a spec you want to learn here rather than mid-reception.

Build quality, ranked honestly

Nobody in this comparison is selling you a toy, but there is a clear hierarchy. In Curtis Judd's hands-on reviews, the Halo puts metal where the stress lives, at the yoke and the Bowens mount, with plastic end caps. The Ray 660c carries a metal yoke in the same class as an Aputure STORM 400X, wrapped in a high-density polymer shell. Within the Ray family, Caleb Pike flagged a real split: the 360c gets a plastic handle that loosens but does not ratchet, while the 660c gets the full metal yoke, a machined ratcheting handle, and a junior-compatible pin. The Aputure STORM remains the durability king, with the all-metal body built for rental abuse, and that is part of what its price buys.

The honest trade

Where the Halo wins

Price per watt of clean white light. Nothing we sell puts a real COB key light in front of a face for less money. Its 85 degree beam fills ordinary Bowens softboxes and lanterns evenly, so the modifiers you may already own just work. And it is the simplest studio light to live with: two dials, one AC cord on the bigger models, done. For a plugged-in interview or podcast room, the Halo is the rational default, and the savings buy the softbox that improves your image more than any spec would.

Where the Ray costs you

The sticker is only the start. Ray's 70 degree beam performs best through Ray's own double-diffusion modifiers, so budget for those rather than assuming any heavy third-party softbox is fair game. Note that neither line ships with a real key-light modifier. The Ray 60c and 120c at least include the small Octadome 30, which Curtis Judd and Caleb Pike both treat as a hair light or small-product light, not a key. A Halo box contains a light, and that is the whole party.

Owner reports worth knowing. Halo 300x owners report the light does not restore its last settings when power is reconnected, unlike most amaran and Aputure fixtures, and some owners find certain modifiers fit fussily and the power cord short. These are community reports we have not bench-verified, but they are consistent enough to mention before you build an install around one.

The two mistakes we see at our Vancouver showroom

The first mistake is buying on watts alone. A brighter light with a weaker spectrum is still the weaker light for faces, and the 74 versus 82 daylight gap does more for an interview frame than an extra size class. The second mistake is buying a Ray and hanging a heavy third-party modifier on it. The yoke was not designed for that load, and the 70 degree beam was not designed for that diffusion. Buyers who match the Ray to its own modifier line are consistently the happier ones a month later.

Is the Amaran Ray better than the Halo as a plain white light?

Measurably, yes, in daylight mode. Gerald Undone and Curtis Judd both metered the Halo line at an SSI of about 74 in daylight with a Sekonic C-800, while Curtis Judd metered Ray fixtures at 82. Ray's OmniColor engine adds an indigo emitter that fills out the spectrum, so skin renders more faithfully. Set to tungsten, the two lines nearly meet, and a Halo on its own still white-balances cleanly.

Which is brighter, Amaran Halo or Ray?

Per dollar, Halo buys more white output, and that is its whole pitch. That is real insurance at weddings, on beaches, and under Vancouver drizzle, though it is still not a light to leave out in the rain. The Halo series has no ingress rating at all. If your fixture will ever work outdoors, this one line decides the series.

When should I skip both and buy an Aputure STORM?

When color accuracy is the deliverable itself: commercial, broadcast, or agency work where a colorist will pick apart skin tones. The STORM line's BLAIR engine measures around 85 SSI in the same Sekonic C-800 comparisons, and its all-metal build is a different class of rugged.
