The FS trap is the most common Nanlite regret in owner discussions: FS lights never run on batteries. Not with an accessory, not later, not ever. People buy the cheap one for a wedding and learn this at the venue. The other recurring FS note is fan noise; interview shooters ask about the FS-300B's fan, and one owner swapped it out. On wall power in a fixed studio, neither matters much, and that is the job the line is priced for. Away from an outlet, FS is the wrong buy.

Power is the fine print. Halo 60x and 100x run from USB-C PD power banks. The Ray 60c and 120c take amaran's magnetic batteries and USB-C. Everything bigger, on both lines, is a wall-power light with an internal supply and a single cable. Amaran's battery advantage is a small-light advantage.
Build has fine print too. Halo is amaran's most affordable COB line ever, and it shows in places (more on that below). Within Ray, the 360c gets a plastic tilt handle where the 660c gets a full metal yoke that Curtis Judd rated at the same grade as Aputure's STORM 400x. Sidus Link vs NANLINK: the app decides more than the specs
Amaran runs on Sidus Link, the same app that controls Aputure's pro lights, so one phone screen scales from a pocket light to a STORM. On Halo and Ray, wired DMX arrives through a USB-C accessory rather than a built-in port, and the Aputure pro line above them speaks CRMX, the wireless DMX standard that lighting consoles expect.
Nanlite runs on NANLINK, its own 2.4GHz system. It controls the whole Nanlite family, and for a self-contained kit dimmed from a phone it is genuinely enough. In tube cross-shopping threads it is also the most common tiebreaker that sends people to amaran. CRMX appears only on the PavoSlim panels, so a Nanlite kit is harder to hand to a console operator later. If a lighting console is anywhere in your future, the Aputure family path is smoother. If it is not, do not pay extra for it.

Where Nanlite wins, and its warts
Plugged-in output for the money is Nanlite's home turf. Nothing in the amaran lineup gives you a 300W-class key at the FS-300B's $336, and reviewers keep framing that light as cinema-grade quality at a bargain price. The tube bench is deeper, and Newsshooter rated the PavoTube II 30C's color accuracy as very good for the class. The PavoSlim panels are passive-cooled, silent, and carry CRMX; reviewers position them as the affordable answer to LiteMat. In long-running buy-in threads, owners call Nanlite some of the highest-quality lights for the price, and some prefer their color to Aputure's.
The warts, from the same threads: the AC-only FS limit and the fan questions you already read about; PavoTube owners report weak magnet mounts and the occasional unit that dies (both brands get Canadian warranty support through us); and NANLINK is an app nobody brags about.
Where Amaran wins, and its warts
Measured color per dollar is amaran's; Curtis Judd's C-800 numbers above tell that story. Small-light mobility is the other real edge: USB-C Halos, magnetic-battery small Rays, IP54 housings. Know the limit, though. Caleb Pike of DSLR Video Shooter measured a Ray 120c at full daylight output draining amaran's own Peak battery in 27 minutes, and a larger USB-C battery in about an hour and a half. Add the better app and the T-series tubes riggers keep choosing: amaran wins wherever the kit moves.
The warts: Halo is amaran's cheapest-built line, and owners report the 300x forgetting its power state, fussy modifier fit, and short cords. The T4c runs warm at 100% in white mode and is not the brightest tube in RGB. The F22c mat cannot dim low enough for close work (owners say 1% is still bright), its stock fan hums, and some early diode failures were replaced under warranty.

Should a beginner buy Nanlite or Amaran?
Decide by power source, not badge. If your first light will live in one room on wall power, the Nanlite FS-300B is the cheapest honest 300W-class key we sell. If your lights will travel, or you expect to add Aputure gear later, start with an amaran Halo or Ray so everything stays on one app. Both brands are easy to operate; neither is a wrong first light.
Is Nanlite as color-accurate as Amaran?
For white light, effectively yes. Published CRI and TLCI figures for both brands' current lines sit around 96 to 98, and reviewers rate both as color-accurate. The measured gap that exists is between engine tiers, not brands: on Curtis Judd's Sekonic C-800, amaran's full-color Ray reads SSI 82 to 86 while the bi-color Halo reads about 74 in daylight. Pick your brand on power, app, and lineup instead.
Can I mix Nanlite and Amaran lights in one kit?
It works on paper. Both brands use Bowens mounts on most COBs, so modifiers interchange. The pain is control: amaran runs on Sidus Link, Nanlite runs on NANLINK, and they do not talk to each other. Changing looks mid-event means juggling two apps with no free hand. Keep one working kit inside one family, and only cross brands for a fixture that stays parked, like a permanent backdrop light.

What is the Amaran equivalent of the Nanlite FS-300B?
The amaran Halo 300x. Both are bi-color, 300W-class, wall-powered Bowens COBs. The Nanlite is cheaper at $336 versus $418.99, and it is a proven workhorse. The Halo 300x is the newer design, and amaran claims class-leading brightness for its size. If you want full color at this level, the matchup becomes FS-300C versus Ray 360c, and there the Ray is both cheaper and better measured.
Do Nanlite and Amaran lights all use Bowens mounts?
Mostly, and it is one reason mixing modifiers across these brands is painless. The FS, Forza, Halo, and Ray COB lines are all Bowens. The exceptions: Nanlite's FC series uses the brand's own FM mount, tubes and pocket lights use their own clip-on accessories, and Aputure's STORM line up the ladder uses ProLock, which accepts Bowens through an adapter. Check the mount line on any product page before buying modifiers.
